Light and atmosphere can really elevate the art form of photography whether is be a portrait or a redwood forest scene like this. Seeing what ideal light and atmosphere can do for a scene or subject was a turning point in my photography, and after experiencing it, i have chased it ever since! Luckily on this day I found it once again, but I had visualized and hoped for it, so maybe that helped a bit… When a scene comes alive as it reacts with these ideal elements, it becomes more about a feel, mood, and energy. All I can do is be grateful that I’m there to witness what is often a fleeting moment and then do my best to capture and convey that feel, mood, and energy. Ultimately this is in the form of a static piece of art with a large high resolution archival print being the finally and most authentic way to encapsulate that feel, mood, and energy!
Now this particular scene was not that exact turning point but it did reaffirm my pursuit of that feeling you get when the subject matter, light, and atmosphere all align to create magic! Of these elements I feel light is the most important. I will often look back at my grandfathers portrait work noticing his skillful use of light, and how great his work was for the time. While he lived in Ottawa Ontario Canada he had worked with a famous Canadian-Armenian photographer by the name of Yousuf Karsh. His work was famous for how well he used light within his portrait photography and possibly some of that genius rubbed off on my grandfather.. Yousuf Karsh photographed some of the most famous people in the world such as; Queen Elizabeth, John Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Andy Warhol, Alfred Hitchcock, Nelson Mandela, Ernest Hemingway, Muhammad Ali, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Humphrey Bogart, just to name a few!! On a side one of Yousuf Karsh photos of Queen Elizabeth will be used for Britain’s Royal Mail special stamps in memory of Queen Elizabeth.
