‘Mists of Endor’ – California Redwoods Forest Photography Print. Its not often I come across a scene in nature that to my eye looks perfect, especially when it comes to woodland forest scenes and more so Old Growth Forests. Nature in general and woodlands are often very chaotic and messy, which can still be very beautiful, but maybe just not as photogenic. On a recent trip this section of a Redwood Grove along the Del Norte Coast in California was something that stopped me dead in my tracks and made me say out loud; Holy Shit, Wow!! as i was hiking solo through the Redwood forest. I setup my equipment and began immediately working on this particular composition, surprisingly not departing from it at all. I guess it just immediately spoke to me, and captivated my attention. As I was shooting there was some faint mist coming and going in the background, and i was just enjoying the scene as well as my solitude. After about an hour another photographer surprised me from up the trail. He ended up shooting a hand held version of the scene from a slightly different vantage point and then carried on his way. I could feel that the conditions were going to start to change in my favour and not long after he left a dense bank of fog started to roll in and the scene really started to take shape! The mist lingered perfectly in the background simplifying the scene and giving it that depth and ethereal quality I alway look for in woodland scenes. The next logical thought was; how about some defused side light?? Well as you see here that wish was also granted, and this was now, in my mind the perfect scene! You have a stunning and massive Old Growth Redwood perfectly on centre and the obvious main subject. You have the large Redwoods on either side of the frame keeping the viewers eye from wandering out of the scene. You have the smaller sapling to the right of the Old Growth Redwood for scale, along with the perfectly manicured forest floor and beautiful sword ferns catching the soft light. Add a small winding path for mystery and depth as well as a visual journey for the eye to follow. Lastly you have the perfect conditions of mist to simplify the background, and soft diffused light to create contrast and additional depth! Truly a perfect scene in my mind, and so thankful my patience paid off to stick around to see it come to fruition! From a technical standpoint this print is very high resolution as I shot four vertical images and then blended them together to capture the entire scene. Using four images increase the resolution dramatically from using a single frame. This print could be enlarged to wall size 10′ height + by 20′ wide or more. As a side note regarding the name of the print in case you are not a Star Wars fan. It is referring to Endor the Forest Moon which was a location in Return of the Jedi which was filmed in the California Redwoods not far from this location. As a child seeing that movie, and then learning that the Redwoods were a real place, I was immediately enthralled with the idea of one day being able to visit such a place!
