‘Guardians of the Grove’ – Vancouver Island Old Growth Forest Photography. When i think of what an Ancient Old Growth Forest should look like, this scene is exactly what I picture in my mind! When I envision an art piece showcasing an Old Growth Forest scene I automatically think scale. Scale of showcasing the incredible size of these Ancient Giants, but also the scale of the print itself to ensure it does the scene justice! Many of my forest scene prints are purchased as 4’x8’ prints and even larger, with the largest forest scene print being a massive Fine Art print measuring 9’ tall x 16’ wide!! As I compose and shoot an Old Growth Forest scene like this one, I never think, “what is this going to look like on social media, on a 2.5×5” iPhone screen?” That will never do a scene like this justice, or the level of detail that these Fine Art Prints can showcase, as well as the rich colours and luminosity of the light in the scene.
This particular Ancient Forest is one of the last remaining untouched forest groves on Vancouver Island that has no paths, no stairs or elevated boardwalks etc., it just remains like it has for thousands of years. There is evidenced of logging hundreds of years ago around it, but this area seems to be untouched which is incredibly rare to find. It has also gone relatively unnoticed from a tourist standpoint, but has been receiving more attention as of late. Delicate forest eco systems like this cannot handle large volumes of foot traffic as it eventually leads to erosion around the bases of these Ancient Trees and potentially their demise. So therein lies the dilemma as the more people that can see these Ancient Forests, the more will want to protect them. But by documenting them I hope to increase the awareness of how endangered they are and hopefully evoke some of that passion for people to want to protect them without the harm.
This particular Old growth Forest and others are under direct threat from our local NDP government and its logging companies, with their current method of talk and log, where they discuss logging deferrals while actively logging these last truly irreplaceable Ancient Forests.
A portion of the proceeds of all of my Fine Art Forest Photography print sales go towards protecting these Forests by assisting the Forest Defenders of Rainforest Flying Squad with supplies and donations.
