Product Description

‘Mossome Giant’ – Vancouver Island Old Growth Forest Photography. Finding this incredible and very unique Ancient Big Leaf Maple was years in the making! It is a central feature in an Old Growth Forest deep in the heart of Vancouver Island. Not unlike this scene, the surrounding forest is something out of a fairy tale, with the combination of massive Old Growth Sitka Spruce, and Ancient Big Leaf Maples covered in hanging mosses and Sword Ferns! I’ve visited many spectacular Old Growth Forests from California to lower Alaska, and this is by far the most awe inspiring forest I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing. This forest has such a unique combination of Megaflora and being that it has gone virtually untouched for eons is what I think makes it so special. I shot this scene over the course of 3 days with my loyal companion Jadi The Adventure Dog, and at one point after having hiked deeper into the forest, I lost my route back. Well it ended up Jadi knew the exact route back as she scent marks all the way in so I have to give her a big thank you for getting us out efficiently as it became increasingly hard to see landmarks with the dwindling light as we hiked well into the evening. During that 3 days days of shooting I studied how the light interacted with this amazing specimen as well as this massive horizontal limb that reaches out 80 feet! The shear mechanic’s to support this is incredible! I’ve seen massive Banyan tree branches but they support themselves by sending roots down that eventually become supports, so this tree is very unique. According to the BC Big Tree Registry, this is longest horizontal branch in British Columbia! I think this is an optimistic feeling image and I hope there is a paradigm shift coming where our government no longer thinks of British Columbia’s Old Growth Forests as a commodity. They need to be embraced for what they are; extremely important cultural and spiritual places that are not only incredible important to so much wildlife but just as import to us and especially the aboriginals that cared for these lands thousands of years before us. I am absolutely appalled that in this day and age we are still bound and determined to log places like this, and this exact grove is unprotected, so let’s make sure that never happens! As time went on each day that I shot this scene, I would become increasingly enveloped with the orchestral sound track of the scene that was comprised of many song birds, plus hawks, eagles, owls, and the odd elk in the background. While enjoying and shooting this scene I thought repeatedly that I hope I can capture a bit of what I felt in this amazing place and covey that with this ultimately becoming an art piece that someone felt strongly enough about to display and enjoy in their own home. I portion of all my Forest Fine Art Photography Print sales go to help protect these amazing ancient places such as Fairy Creek, Eden Grove, as well as this grove, all of which are truly irreplaceable! Funds raised from these print sales have been used to purchase supplies for the Fairy Creek Blockade and the Eden Grove Blockade, as well as adding to the legal defence fund for the Forest Defenders of the Fairy Creek Blockade. Thank you for viewing and reading this far, it means a lot to me, and hopefully we can help protect the Ancient Old Growth Forests of Vancouver Island.
