‘Inner Peace’ – Vancouver Island Old Growth Forest Photography Print. Its always exciting to discover a new to me, Old Growth Forest, and I’m surprised this one was not on my radar, but then again it is a pretty remote area! My daughter and I discover this Old Growth Forest on the Northern End of Vancouver Island, roughly 25km from the village of Port Alice. We arrived well into the evening in early Mar 2023, and decided to give it a quick explore before the sun set, with our trusty adventure dog Jadi. After about ten minutes of exploring into the grove, Jadi began to act very erratic, pacing back and fourth, running ahead, and in random directions. Once I got here back on the leash she proceeded to pull vigorously back the way we came all the way to our campsite we had setup on the edge of the grove. We are not sure what got into her but she obviously sensed something in that forest that we could not see. As we sat around the fire that evening she would rarely take her eye of that forest, and would still pace around us as if to check our perimeter, then sitting down only to stare towards that forest again. The next morning undeterred by Jadi’s strange behaviour the previous evening, we decided to explore the grove further, but before heading off we made a lot of noise so our presence would be very apparent. We also decided to enter from another direction as we had come across some impassible blow down. Eventually we rounded a bend and a large nurse log to be greeted with this stunning section of the grove. It was almost like a grove within the grove, and was much more manicured than the rest. The path was a perfect bed of moss and lead to an opening in the ferns that you can sort of see here. If you look close there is even a little log that invites one to sit down and take in the grandeur of the forest scene around you. The light started to break through the trees and mist so I quickly setup my gear just in time to capture a few exposures before it became to intense for photography. It was a fleeting moment as it often is in photography, but lucky I was there in time to capture “Inner Peace”
