Product Description

‘Emerald Embrace’ – Emerald Lake Lodge, Yoho National Park. Canadian Rockies Fine Art Photography. This has been a bucket-list location and shoot for me for many years now. It is a stunningly beautiful spot in the summer, but I feel this is one of the prettiest places in all of the Canadian Rockies come winter! Once a heavy blanket of snow complements this scene it becomes a truly magical place, and to be there over Christmas was such a treat! That cabin looks so warm and inviting on a cold winters evening! Now this image barely happened, and was shot well into the evening after driving over 12hours from the Vancouver area, which was due to extremely poor driving conditions over the Coquihalla summits. It was like the road crew was on Christmas Holidays! Once we arrived we walked down to this little reflection pond and enjoyed the stunningly beautiful surroundings. The mountains were all socked in and you really couldn’t see much detail in the snow, but even then it was still beautiful. However I had pre visualized some wispy clouds, a bit of moonlight cast onto the mountains, some twinkling stars, crisp reflections, a warm inviting glow from the cabin, and maybe even making use of our little camping lantern for some foreground interest, but the socked in conditions weren’t supporting my little fairy tale image haha. A little later that evening just before bed, I went out to walk our dog Jadi one last time when I noticed it had become a lot brighter out. The snow had now taken on a beautiful glow, and as I looked up towards the mountains I could see some of the mountains sides in the background beginning to appear. I quickly grabbed my gear and headed down to the pond again, oh but wait how about that lantern; I did a quick trip back and then rushed to get setup, lantern and all. The excitement of this stunning scene emerging quickly erased my exhaustion of 12hrs of treacherous travel on ice and snow covered mountain passes! I moved toward a composition I had eyed up earlier as we walked around, which had some beautiful pillowy snow banks in the foreground and figured this would be a pretty spot to create some foreground interest and illuminate with our rustic little lantern. To my surprise once I looked up after setting up my camera equipment I was greeted with moonlight on the now fully exposed mountain peaks!! The scene had come together exactly how I had visualized but was even more beautiful than I had imagined! I shot some quick images to create a sharp foreground and then focused on the cabin, which also brought the mountains into sharp focus! I fired off a shot for this, then put my head down to check focus on both images and when I looked up, the moonlight was gone, and the mountains began to disappear behind the mist and clouds once again. I thought well that’s ok we have 4 nights here, ill have plenty of opportunities to re shoot this scene should these images not quote work out. Well I’m glad they did work out, as these conditions never materialized for the remainder of the trip, and I was so happy that I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to come away with one of my all time favourite prints; ‘Emerald Embrace’.
