‘Cathedral Giants’ – Vancouver Island Old Growth Photography. While on route to this stunning Old Growth Forest in the heart of Vancouver Island my excitement was growing! Our eventual destination was Tofino a small fishing and surf town on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. As we neared the grove my reasons for excitement were growing for a couple reasons; one I just love wandering through Old Growth Forests, and two, the conditions were perfect! When I say perfect, that means rainy, misty, generally miserable by most peoples standards, but for a photographer shooting a forest, this is ideal. There was also a bit of of occasional light filtering through the clouds as well; I couldn’t ask for more. As we rounded the bend when the main part of the grove came into view we were greeted with tall fencing and signs posted everywhere! The park was closed!! I was disappointed to say the least. However for anybody that knows me I don’t give up easily. I decided to get out of the Jeep and walk the fence lines to see if I could get a glimpse of any pocket views or compositions, but wasn’t successful, and the rain was really coming down hard now. We drove back out of the park, and parked at the side of the road. I decided to get out once again and just tour the perimeter of the grove when I caught a glimpse of this composition, and I was sold! It was a stunning scene and even had some order to it which is next to impossible to find in our forests here on Vancouver Island. The icing on the cake was some dappled light which started to enter the scene and made for an absolutely stunning moment! The light really showcased the beautiful textures of the Old Growth Douglas Fir bark, and created a focal point of light in the centre of the scene. I was a happy photographer after enjoying and capturing this beautiful moment and forest scene! Had the park not been closed I would have never found this beautiful composition! Sharing these moments with my clients is an added bonus, especially when I get to see these moments proudly displayed in theirs homes and offices! A portion of the profits from Michael’s Old Growth Photography print sales will be donated to charitable organizations such as the Fairy Creek Blockade, and the Rain Forest Flying squad to help protect the remaining Ancient Forests of Vancouver Island. These funds have assisted and added to the legal defence fund for the Forest Defenders of the Fairy Creek Blockade. Michael is proud that his Vancouver Island Old Growth Photography Prints can’t help generate funds, even if its just a small amount, every little bit helps this extremely important cause!
