‘Yaris in Wonderland’ – Vancouver Downtown Eastside BC. This is one of the first prints in a new series i have been working on for sometime now, featuring street photography from Vancouver’s Downtown East-Side and a bit of the surrounding area. This has definitely been an interesting project, and at times very dangerous having almost been mugged in the process!! For anyone that know me I’m not a big fan of the city to begin with, and seeing the conditions in some of these areas was sad and appalling. However i did learn alot about the history of many of these areas in and around the downtown east side. This particular image is a real step back in time, and I’m sure if those walls of the Astoria could talk there would be some very interesting stories! I do know there has been a number of murders in the hotel over the years, and it is currently an (SRO), single room occupancy, apparently owned by the Sahota family, notorious slumlords in the downtown east side. I love the mood in this scene with the fog in the air, and the light cast by the neon and other surrounding lights. But i feel the elements that really make the scene are the very fitting character you see looking out the window and the juxtaposition of the Yaris parked in front haha! Hence how it got its name; ‘YARIS IN WONDERLAND’
